Leith Walk

One of the largest streets in Edinburgh, Leith Walk is perhaps as famous as the likes of Princes Street and The Royal Mile.
The road itself of Leith Walk connects the various areas of Leith with the City Centre and is a bustling area of the city which is popular with businesses and people alike. Historically it used to carry people by coach in the 1700s from the Foot of the Walk to where the North Bridge was being constructed but it eventually fell into a state of disrepair and wasn’t relaid until 1810, where much of what you see on Leith Walk today started to be built up.

Location

Depending on how technical you want to be… Leith Walk is generally accepted as starting from the roundabout North from the Omni Centre, just off London Road – however the likes of Elm Row (where the roundabout is actually situated) and Haddington Place are technically separate streets located before the start of Leith Walk. The Foot of the Walk is located at the bottom of Leith Walk and is made up of Duke Street, Great Junction Street and The Newkirkgate. There are many frequent bus routes down Leith Walk, as well as it being within walking distance of the City Centre. Traffic is notoriously congested on Leith Walk, as to be expected with one of the main routes into the city.
