The Shore

Area Guides from Cameron Stephen & Co.

The Shore

Established as the port of Edinburgh in 1329 and historically known as the Port of Leith, The Shore has been used for many purposes over the years including freight, whaling, cruise liners and even as an airport in the 1940s. It was also where parts of the famous Mulberry Harbours were constructed. A favourite with Edinburgh locals who flock to its many bars & restaurants all year round but particularly in the summertime to enjoy the bustling nightlife and friendly atmosphere is has to offer. Close by is Leith Links which provides a great space for walking, jogging, dog walking as well as various different sporting activities. As well as being a short bus ride from the City Centre, on its doorstep The Shore also boasts the Ocean Terminal, a hub of shops and entertainment, as well as being the home of The Royal Yacht Britannia.

Location

Located off the bottom of Leith Walk and a short bus ride from the City Centre. Lothian Buses will get you too and from the City Centre with a number of regular buses, including the 200 bus which goes from Ocean Terminal to Edinburgh Airport.

Places to Visit

Ocean Terminal
With ample free parking, Ocean Terminal is a popular choice for shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment for those who want to avoid a jaunt into the City Centre & the extortionate parking costs that come with it. With a Vue cinema, many shops (including M&S, Debenhams, Boots & Waterstones), Oceanplay Soft Play, Pure Gym & Spa and many restaurants to choose from (including Frankie & Benny’s, Zizi and Wagamama), you could easily spend an entire day at Ocean Terminal.

Royal Yacht Britannia
Britannia was initially launched from Clydebank in 1953 and went on to serve The Royal Family for over 44 years. Now conveniently located beside and accessible from within Ocean Terminal, it is a five-star visitor attraction, making Britannia a visit like no other.

The Water of Leith Walkway
Beautiful on a sunny day but pleasant for a wander all year round. A walk which will take you away from the rush of the city and through various areas of interest in Edinburgh.

Places to Eat & Drink

If it’s for cake and coffee, Mimi’s Bakehouse is a winner. Located right in the centre of The Shore, you can expect to find an exceptional selection of irresistible cakes and treats on offer.
When you fancy a tipple, head to Kings Wark. A bar & restaurant with a fascinating history dating right back to the 1400’s. With an amazing selection on gins on offer, you’ll also find a selection of cask ales, fine wines, cocktails and coffees.

For fans of good seafood, The Ship on The Shore is the place for you. Taking advantage of what fish and seafood the area has to offer, you’ll find dishes like lobster & rib eye steak, shellfish platter, champagne & oysters and a decent cocktail menu too.

And for something a bit more special, Michelin Star chef, Martin Wishart, has also chosen The Shore as the home to his Martin Wishart Restaurant. With modern French cuisine on offer, using only the best Scottish ingredients, it’s an experience you won’t be quick to forget.
