On Edinburgh’s coast, between Leith and Granton you will find Newhaven. Historically a village of it’s own, Newhaven was once Edinburgh’s hub for fishing and it still maintains a degree of that to this day. The Newhaven harbour was first built in 1504 to accommodate the build of the warship, The Great Michael. With a broad history including that of oyster fishing and whaling, it was Newhaven fisherman that would dominate the Firth of Forth. Now shadowed by the Port of Leith and the industrial fishing era, Newhaven is used less-so for fishing than it once was but it still remains a busy harbour town.
On Edinburgh’s coastline of the Firth of Forth, situated between Leith and Granton, Newhaven is easily accessible from the City Centre via Edinburgh’s Lothian Bus service.
Newhaven Harbour
A lovely walk around the harbour is just what is needed to blow away the cobwebs! With lots of boats and a lighthouse, you can still see signs of the history of Newhaven even before you see the Fishmarket. Not as busy as it once was but still in use, you’ll no doubt smell it before you see it.
Alien Rock
If Rock Climbing is your thing, you’ve probably already heard of Alien Rock. Edinburgh’s most established Rock Climbing centre can be found in Newhaven and is available for use by climbers of all abilities.
As expected, a historical fisherman’s village has some great seafood on offer. Loch Fyne is a beautiful restaurant right on the harbour which serves all the seafood you could possibly imagine.
If you are eating out with the kids, there is a great Brewers Fayre right behind the harbour which serves good, predictable meals to suit the family. And best of all it has a massive soft play inside, so is perfect for rainy Edinburgh days, when you fancy a nice lunch and five minutes peace.
When it comes to a cup of coffee, a light lunch or a delicious breakfast, Porto & Fi on Newhaven’s Main Street is a lovely family run cafe-deli-bistro with a great wee menu and the option to takeaway.
Perhaps a bit inconspicuous from the exterior but famed for their Steak Pies, Masons Bakery in Newhaven is a lovely little bakery serving all the family favourites.
