The Edinburgh Marathon is taking place this weekend and although it’s now too late to take part, there’s plenty of other ways to up your fitness levels here in Edinburgh.

Whatever you enjoy and whatever your budget, Edinburgh is sure to have something to offer in terms of exercise.


You don’t need to be training for a marathon to enjoy running in Edinburgh. With plenty of parks across the city, popular with runners of all abilities, you’ll not be short of routes to get out and seeing the city. There’s lots of organised running groups across Edinburgh if you fancy some company, as well as the Edinburgh Park Run which runs every Saturday.


Although cycling through the city centre takes a certain kind of nerve, Edinburgh does also have some fantastic cycle routes throughout the city. Whether you’re serious about your biking or simply looking to get out as a family, take a look at the different cycle routes and set off for a day of adventure.


Edinburgh Leisure have a number of swimming pools across the city, including the traditional Victorian pools of Portobello and Leith Victoria. But if you fancy a real challenge (& shock to the system!) why not join the groups that do open water swimming at Portobello? Rain or shine you’ll see them braving the water of the Firth of Forth.


There’s too many gyms in Edinburgh to count but perhaps the most existing gym in Edinburgh right now is Projekt 42, based here in Leith. Projekt 42 is a community based gym & wellness centre located at Newkirkgate, that focuses on strengthening the connection between mental health and physical fitness. As a charity, Projekt 42 is ran on the donations & it’s supporters, with any profits being invested back into the community to help those who need it the most. You’ll find classes like Yoga, Metafit, Zumba and Army Boxing Fitness, all on offer at Projekt 42.
